Abstract:
The study on biodegradable metals is one of the most active research directions in the field of metallic biomaterials. After over twenty years of scientific data accumulation by world-wide research institutions and enterprises, till now there are Mg-based, Fe-based, and Zn-based biodegradable metal implants/interventional devices being clinically used or first-in-man studied, which have promising future. In this work, the definition, biodegradability and biocompatibility dual criteria, and classifications of biodegradable metals were reviewed, and the research status, unresolved scientific problems, and future challenges and opportunities on the Mg-based, Fe-based, and Zn-based biodegradable metals were discussed in detail. On the basis of the in-depth understanding about the scientific issues on the mechanical adaption, biodegradation adaption, and tissue adaption between the biodegradable metal and host after implanting materials into the body, people will aim at new materials, new technologies, and new methods to realize the precise bioadaption spatially and temporally between the degradation procedure of biodegradable metals and the tissue repair procedure of the host in the coming future.
